The lungs are constantly exposed to many risks of infection, some are benign but others can be fatal: pneumonia could kill 11 million children by 2030, and tuberculosis is one of the top 10 causes mortality in the world.

Pneumonia is an acute respiratory infection affecting the lungs. According to WHO (World Health Organization), it is the leading infectious cause of child mortality and « causes 15% of the total number of deaths of children under five ». The WHO estimates that 922,000 children under five died of pneumonia in 2015 worldwide.

Treatment: prevention is possible through vaccination, a satisfactory nutritional status and an improvement in environmental factors. The bacteria responsible for pneumonia are increasingly resistant to antibiotics. When pneumonia is severe or the risk of complications is high, hospitalization may be necessary. We can then administer drugs intravenously or provide oxygen if we find that the blood oxygen level is too low.

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by a bacterium (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) most commonly affecting the lungs. In 2016, an estimated 1 million children have developed TB and 250,000 have died. According to the WHO, 7 countries account for 64% of cases, with India in the lead, followed by Indonesia, China, the Philippines, Nigeria, Pakistan and South Africa. Global progress depends on what will be done in these countries for the prevention and care of this disease. However, France is not spared and several thousand cases are identified each year.

Treatment: it is a disease that can be cured and healed. For drug-sensitive, active TB, a standard 6-month regimen consisting of 4 anti-tuberculosis drugs is provided along with information, surveillance and patient assistance provided by a health worker or trained volunteer. Without this support, adherence can be difficult and the disease can spread. The vast majority of cases can be cured if medications are provided and taken correctly.

Parisian hospitals are specialized in the treatment of these respiratory diseases, including the Cochin Hospital with one of the leading centers for the treatment of pleural infections, or the National Reference Center for Mycobacteria and the resistance of Mycobacteria to Antituberculosis at the Pitié Salpêtrière University Hospital.
