Birth defects (at birth) are not uncommon, accounting for an estimated 1 in 33 births worldwide, or 7.9 million children in 2006. They represent a significant cost to society and, of course, also a major personal and family cost throughout life. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world, accounting for 31% of deaths worldwide.
Indeed, the frequency of congenital malformations has not decreased for decades, apart from neurological malformations in countries such as France, where folic acid (vitamin B9) supplementation is used in pregnant women. Diabetes or maternal obesity, which is constantly increasing, seems to favour congenital malformations. New causes regularly appear, such as, for example, the Zika virus epidemic…
Although birth defects can be genetic, infectious or environmental in origin, it is most often difficult to determine the exact cause.
1/ Socio-economic and demographic factors: It is estimated that about 94% of cases of severe congenital anomalies occur in low- and middle-income countries where the mother may be more exposed to malnutrition and to agents or factors that may induce or increase the incidence of abnormal prenatal development.
2/ Genetic factors: Inbreeding increases the prevalence of rare genetic birth defects by almost doubling the risk of newborn and child death, intellectual disorders and other birth defects in children born to first cousins.
3/ Environmental factors: Maternal exposure to certain pesticides and other chemicals, as well as certain drugs, alcohol, tobacco, psychotropic substances or radiation during pregnancy increases the risk of having a fetus or newborn affected by birth defects.
There are 1001 ways to treat congenital diseases. It must first be identified by means of tests such as radiology, blood tests or samples. Then you need to know the severity of the problem and choose the most appropriate treatment. This treatment can be temporary or prescribed for life. It can be drug-based or multidisciplinary.
