Oral diseases: a global scourge

Oral diseases affect 3.5 billion people. Of these dental treatments, cavities are the most common form, but gum disease and oral cancers should not be neglected. These often prohibitively expensive diseases cause pain, infections, reduced quality of life and reduced productivity at work, particularly among the poorest and most marginalized. Indeed, even the most basic dental care is not available and most diseases are not treated. However, in these countries one of the main causes of oral diseases is increasing: sugar consumption. The latter, together with smoking and harmful alcohol consumption, is an essential and modifiable risk factor. Severe periodontal disease (gum disease), which can lead to tooth loss, was estimated to be the eleventh most common disease in the world.

Noma :
Noma is a necrotic disease that affects children aged 2 to 6 years who are malnourished, have an infectious disease, live in extreme poverty and have a weakened immune system. It is especially widespread in sub-Saharan Africa. It begins with a soft tissue (gum) lesion in the mouth. The initial lesion turns into necrotic ulcerative gingivitis, which progresses rapidly, destroying soft tissue, hard tissue and facial skin. In 1998, WHO estimated that 140,000 new cases of noma occur each year. If not treated, no-ma is fatal in 90% of cases. If detected at an early stage, its progression can be quickly stopped with good hygiene, antibiotic therapy and nutritional recovery. Early detection prevents suffering, disability and death. Surviving children have severe facial deformities, have difficulty speaking and eating, are stigmatized and require surgical treatment and complex rehabilitation.

Lip cracks and hare beak :
Labial cracks and hare beaks are heterogeneous attacks on the lips and oral cavity that occur alone (70%) or as part of a syndrome. Worldwide, more than one in every 1000 newborns is affected. Although genetic predisposition is an important factor in congenital anomalies, other modifiable risk factors such as poor maternal nutrition, tobacco, alcohol and obesity during pregnancy also play a role. In low-income countries, mortality rates are high during the neonatal period. With proper surgical treatment, complete recovery is possible.

Globally, it is estimated that about 90% of the population is at risk of oral disease. Similarly, 90% of these infections are preventable through simple daily reflexes.
