Epilepsy: complex and still poorly understood….

We hear a lot about chronic diseases linked to intestinal inflammation and six million people suffer from chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) in the world (in France, more than 250,000 people) but these pathologies remain poorly known…

Crohn’s disease is a potentially serious chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Of autoimmune origin, it causes inflammation and irritation that can affect the entire intestine, from mouth to anus. It evolves by inflammatory outbreaks, where the signs are the most important, alternating with phases of more or less complete remission. About one in five Crohn’s patients requires surgery. In the case of hemorrhagic rectocolitis, removal of the colon is sometimes necessary. A fistula (abnormal communication that connects two organs), an abscess (pus accumulation) or a perforation may be the cause of the operation. The development of bleeding or obstruction of the intestine is also possible. After ten years, the risk of colorectal cancer is doubled in people with IBD.

How to diagnose this disease?

The diagnosis begins with a clinical examination (blood test or medical imaging). Their results suggest that there is an IBD. A colonoscopy or endoscopy, which allows the inside of the colon or digestive tract to be seen by inserting a small camera into the body, is then performed to measure inflammation and identify lesions. Sampling, which determines the presence of abnormal changes in the mucous membranes of the digestive tract, is necessary to confirm the diagnosis.

The Paris Saint Joseph Hospital Group has set up multidisciplinary consultation meetings for Chronic Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. This is a bimonthly meeting of proctologists, gastroenterologists, digestive surgeons and radiologists to discuss collegially all files of patients with chronic inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis) who have therapeutic management problems.
