It is a rare disease and affects about 8,000 people in France (1 in 1,000 people), and nearly 120,000 people worldwide, or about 328 new cases every day, and represents 1/3 of neuromuscular disorders. ALS usually starts around the age of 55. It affects both men and women equally.

A neurodegenerative disease, rare, incurable, rapidly progressive, it is the cause of progressive motor disability leading to paralysis. It can begin at any level of the body, then spread in a few months or years to all four limbs and the head, and can cause death on average 2 to 5 years after the first symptoms.

Gradually, the person loses the ability to mobilize their voluntary muscles.
She loses the use of her speech, can no longer move, swallow and, finally, breathe.

However, ALS does not affect any of the five senses (vision, taste, smell, touch, hearing). It also generally does not affect the muscles of the eye, heart, bladder, intestine and sexual organs.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is caused by the loss of motor neurons (or motor neurons) and whose mechanisms responsible for ALS, including the degeneration of motor neurons, remain unknown to this day.

ALS management is multidisciplinary: neurologists, reeducators, pulmonologists, gastroenterologists, speech therapists, physiotherapists, dieticians, nurses, palliative care units, attending physicians and all participate in the management.

1,350 patients are monitored at the Pitié-Salpêtrière site in Paris, including approximately 430 new cases treated each year among the 1,000 new cases recorded each year in France.
